TikTok artists worry about the US ban’s financial impact

FRANCISCO: Ayman Chaudhary made a career out of her passion for reading by creating short videos on TikTok that discussed books that are prohibited in ultra-conservative American states. 

Now, the website that she depends on to provide for her family is about to be prohibited, which Tik Tok business owners view as an assault on their means of subsistence. 

The 23-year-old Chicago native told AFP that it’s her full-time job since it’s so important to small companies and innovators. 

I’m quite concerned about living in a nation that would enact laws like these rather than concentrating on issues that are truly crucial, such as healthcare, education, and gun control. 

Due to a recent US rule, Byte Dance, the main company of Tik Tok, has nine months to sell the wildly popular video platform or face having it banned in the US. 

The platform has shown itself to be quite helpful for newly established enterprises. 

If Byte Dance owns Tik Tok, US legislators claimed, the Chinese government may utilize it for propaganda and spying.  

According to Texas resident Bilal Rehman, everyone engaged in determining whether this platform will be prohibited is ignoring the impact it will have on all small companies. 

With over 500,000 followers, his fun promotion of his company’s interior design work on Tik Tok is called @bilalrehmanstudio.  

They don’t truly grasp social media and how it functions, the 24-year-old said.

The survey found that Tik Tok supports over 224,000 jobs and helps over seven million US businesses develop, generating billions of dollars in revenue. 

Rehman stated of Tik Tok, “It’s grown to be such a huge part of our economy that taking that away is going to be devastating to millions of people.”  

Throughout the early months of 2020, Chaudhary used Tik Tok to convey her love of reading despite enduring COVID-19 lockdowns. 

Chaudhary stated, I made a few videos, and to cut a long story short, one went viral. 

As her following increased, she began to get offers from sponsors and advertisements, and posting on her @aymansbooks Tik Tok account turned into a full-time career. 

As she brought attention to novels that some states had outlawed from schools or libraries, she witnessed the works she praised being devoured by readers.

According to eMarketer analyst Jasmine Enberg, a restriction on Tik Tok would be especially harsh for startups. 

TikTok really amplified the democratization of trade through social media, according to Enberg, who spoke with AFP.  

For many small firms, especially those in specialized markets or with oddball merchandise, it has become an essential platform. The ability of films to spread swiftly by a very engaged audience is one thing that differentiates TikTok from other platforms, according to Enberg.  

She claimed that TikTok algorithm and the engaging material it offers are partly responsible for its unmatched potential for discovery. 

According to Damian Rollison, director of market research at Socii, a younger generation is using TikTok as a kind of search engine, typing searches like those they might on Google and seeing what the algorithm returns.  

I find that TikTok has a lot more creativity and enjoyment than Instagram. My favorite part about TikTok, according to Rehman, is that it simulates a FaceTime conversation with a pal. 

Fans of TikTok claim that its distinct look would be missed if it is banned.  

According to Chaudhary, there is unquestionably a different atmosphere on TikTok than on YouTube or Instagram.

It has a genuine and raw vibe about it. Given the need for short-form video content, Rollison counseled companies depending on TikTok to remain with their short-form video strategy in the case of a ban. 

Younger users’ demand signals are so strong, in my opinion, that usage habits will endure regardless of the results, according to Rollison.  

Understanding that ecosystem is not just a helpful tactic, but also a vital one.
